My Blue Heaven

This past week we have studied and listened to many different types of music, and heard many different songs. I choose to write about “My Blue Heaven” by Gene Austin. When listening to this song for the first time, I enjoyed the soft, smooth sound it had. The words are soft and sweet and compliment the music perfectly. It is a love song that relates birds and nests to love. It also relates love to a cozy room and a fire place. “My Blue Heaven” was the best selling record from 1927 until 1942.

The song has whistling noise in the background that gives the illusion of birds, which ties in perfectly with the lyrics. In the first verse he sings “Night shades falling, love birds calling”, so the whistling in the background gives the illusion of “Love Birds Calling.”

I like the way it made love seem comfortable and peaceful. And how in the song is said “Just Molly and me and baby makes three”. To me, these lyrics said that all he needed to feel love was himself, Molly, and baby, and that the three of them equaled love. It showed that he doesn’t need a lot of fancy things to feel incredible love, but rather just a few people that he loves is all he wants.

  1. I love the sounds of birds thrown into this piece. If I remember correctly, this song was the first to really popularize crooning. So on that side, I can definitely see why it was the best selling record for so long. It defined an era! I also completely agree with your last paragraph about how simplistic love can be. The most beautiful connections humans can experience are able to be created without materialistic needs.

  2. When I first listened to this song in class, I was trying to pay attention to his singing style of crooning, so I was totally oblivious to all of the features in the song that you described. But after reading your post, I went back and listened to the song again. Paying attention to what you mentioned, the birds and the lyrics really changed the song and the way I listened to it. Thanks for sharing and helping me to understand the song a lot better.

  3. I also love the sound of the birds whistling that was added into this song. It was neat to me that before the whistling began, there were high notes from the piano. They were high enough that they resembled the sounds of birds. For a minute, I wondered if that was what you were referring to!

  4. I absolutely loved the birds chirping in this song as well! I thought it added a unique element that, in my opinion, makes the song more memorable. I chose a softer and more calm song for my blog post as well and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The lyrics to this song are very sweet, which I actually really liked.

  5. I love this song so much too! My favorite parts definitely have to be all the added musical elements like the chirping birds (kinda sounds like that weird "cell phone" sound on my old keyboard haha), and how the music seems to finish the phrases he sings. Super pleasant song!

Side note: your blog looks so beautiful! Absolutely love the landscape picture for the background!
